I’m trying to support GOG by buying some games for my Steam Deck (my only gaming pc), but the downloads through Heroic are really slow compared to Steam.

Since you can’t do any background downliading on Heroic on the Deck, I tried downloading the games on my desktop PC through Heroic and importing them on the Deck. Still it’s really slow…

Downloading directly on GOG is also really slow, so I wondered how you were doing it since I can’t have a 40gb game taking 5 hours to download.

Especially because turning off the Deck or my weak computer means starting from scratch again.

I’m on Linux for everything by the way.

How do you manage this?

How slow are we talking? All my GOG downloads through Heroic have always been as fast as my connection allows. It sounds like there may be another issue at play.

    Is there a VPN involved?

Around 0.5 MB/s through heroic and 250 kb/s thrrough Firefox from the GOG website.

But my connection is way faster with everything else…

Yeah that’s abnormal and not what everyone else experiences. Idk what’s wrong and can’t give you any suggestions, but you should be getting better speeds than that. I can download Cyberpunk 2077 off of GOG in a few minutes.

I’ve never used Heroic, so I can’t say what to expect, but I’ve never had any issues downloading games via the GoG website.

Have you tried that? Maybe it’s faster?

Though, honestly, I think i might just be some outage on GoGs side. If the downloads via the website are slow too, it might be worth talking to their support.

Well I’ve contacted GOG’s support and we’ll see what they say. If it’s still like this in a week or two, I’ll just never order games again on GOG despite wanting to support them and really own my games.

I download my gog games through heroic (desktop mode) and have no problems with download speed. Typically then I add the game to steam through Heroic.

40gb game in 5hrs? Might want to check your your bases. Reboot/update deck, reboot wifi router/modem. Run speedtests, retry download.

Well I have only rebooted the Deck, but it also happens on my Linux pc’s.

And downloading Playstation games, Steam games, watching Peertube, watching Nba league pass, watching youtube or listening to music on Tidal works fine.

Directly from GOG or through Heroic, I got these really slow download speeds, so it’s an isolated case.

Edit: after a network test, here’s what I’m getting

24mbs is the max you’ll see in a good day, your speed is pretty slow compared to most. Also you probably wouldn’t get the 24mbs downloading through most services.

To give you a comparison, at one point I had gig internet but still would download at only a few hundred mps. Im currently on 700mps and share that connection with a household streaming everything, and have dropped to 50-100mps for a lot of downloads. You could be seeing 1-5 mbs downloads on that connection which is painfully slow.

Been hoarding some GOG offline installers in my spare time.

GOG infrastructure is just not as robust, I think. I’ve had some luck downloading during non-peak hours (morning and afternoon weekdays), but it’s still slow in comparison to Steam.

Hmmm could you download to desktop pc and set up a Syncthing share to your Steam Deck? Synthing will sync directly over a local network when possible so it shouldn’t be too slow.

Well downloading on my desktop PC gives me the same slow speeds so it doesn’t help.

Especially because weirdly, turning off the computer meant starting at 0% again.

While all of thos could be true, downloading on your PC should be possible to queue multiple games, and doesn’t require you to leave your steam deck turned on. Go for that nostalgic overnight download vibe.
