Jade Helm 2.0: this time for real.

I’ve had similar thoughts these past two or three years but at least with my current life (family, work/studies, volunteering…) going offline isn’t even close to feasible. But at least I have started to move more and more of my online life to FOSS services or smaller or European companies. Finally installed Linux last year, also thinking of dabbling in self-hosting some time in the near future.

But I’m pretty sure the next years will give us a kind of Neo-Luddite movement, because you’re clearly not the only one fed up with modern digitlal tech.

Literally the only thing to understand before using it is the multiple instances, which doesn’t take a PhD. (Even better, you can safely use it even without knowing about instances.)

If people don’t want to move to Mastodon because it’s “too complicated”, they’re not actually looking for an alternative.

Do you already have a server deployed? How familiar are you with Linux?

No server. I just installed Linux a few months ago as dual boot after being a lifelong Windows user (since 3.1 lol). Currently using both OS but will move fully to Linux once I have some projects finished. Self-hosting might become a future project after that and if yes, I’ll come back to this community and this thread!

What’s stopping people you know from taking this step?

I’m a noob when it comes to IT. (Even though in my family I’m the one people ask when they have computer issues lol.) I would really like to get into self-hosting and all that, and I think if I found some good guides I would probably be able to make things work, but it still sounds very daunting to me. Like, I imagine days if not weeks of sifting through online resources to fix a thousand little errors and issues that would come up. (Maybe I’m mistaken, maybe it’s all really easy even for noobs. Just trying to explain my feelings on the matter.)

That’s such a (US) American thing. “Someone coughed when the cop didn’t order it? Deserves to be executed right then and there.” I see it all the time in comments about killings like this and it never stops weirding me out.

Das Gruselige an der derzeitigen US-Regierung ist ja, dass ihnen das alles (Völkerrecht, Zerstörung der NATO, …) völlig egal ist. Ich weiß nicht, ob die US-Oligarchen irgendwie von einem Angriff auf Grönland profitieren können, aber falls ja, dann sehe ich nicht, was sie aufhalten sollte.

Unklar bleibt, wie der Polizeibeamte überhaupt an das untergeschobene Marihuana gekommen ist.

Das ist auch ein starkes Stück. Der Polizist war offensichtlich im Besitz von Marihuana - entweder, um es selbst zu konsumieren (aber gibt man es dann für so eine Aktion auf?), oder schon mit dem Vorsatz, es unliebsamen Verhafteten unterzuschieben. Das erfordert m. E. auch zwingend eine Untersuchung sämtlicher früherer Verhaftungen, an denen der Polizist beteiligt war. Ist ja nicht ausgeschlossen, dass das System hatte.

Im Übrigen bleibt zu hoffen, dass sowohl in den höheren Instanzen als auch im Disziplinarverfahren die Gerechtigkeit siegt und der Mann nie wieder in diesem Beruf arbeiten darf.
