Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•The only grocery store in town now carries frozen sushi
8·5 days agoFlash freezing individual fish feels a bit different than taking out that (presumably thawed) fish, using it to make sushi rolls, and then refreezing it.
Edit: My perception was obscured by disgust and I didn’t realize these are California rolls and don’t have fish, but the point stands. Frozen rice and frozen avocado are fucking gnarly. Frozen avocado especially is a sin.

27·5 days agoI was already upset at the frozen sushi but you just had to go and make this microwave sushi comment. I think I’m done for the night.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Vicente Fox, former CEO of Coca-Cola Mexico, attended a Gen Z protest
3·11 days agoI remember going to one of his rallies when I was like 6 or 7 with my parents and remember it was a huge deal when he became president, people seemed happy about it. I’m curious to ask my parents now what it was.
Dude sounds scummy AF from that wiki page though.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Vicente Fox, former CEO of Coca-Cola Mexico, attended a Gen Z protest
9·11 days agoFor real. I am Mexican and was a child through his presidency and I had no idea he was a CEO of coca cola lmao.
If I’m understanding what you’re trying to ask, yes, there are a lot of people with indigenous heritage especially in California/texas/etc (places that until the Mexican-American war belonged to mexico) and they’re now considered Latino (which I think is what you mean by “Hispanic”.
It should be noted that not all Latin American people are Hispanic (e.g. some speak portuguese), yet many share similar cultures and looks because they are all descendents of indigenous peoples that were colonized.
It’s happening in the US to Native Americans that they’ll be confused for “illegal aliens”(I hate this term but it’s what they call them) and they’ll have their American identity questioned, simply because they look like Mexicans or other Latin American people because, like I said, we’ve all descended from the indigenous peoples of this continent.
Just as an FYI, many Latin American folks don’t like to be referred to as Hispanic because a) not all are, and b) that is the name of the people that conquered us.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How bad is it really to listen to music with headphones? My mother told me if I keep doing that I'd go deaf... Is that fearmongering?
4·13 days agoYeah it’s possible, but what I remember from the other post is about her calling him a loser or useless or something along those lines, so I think she’s just very controlling.

14·14 days agoI have you tagged from an older post and remember your mom saying some whack ass shit in another post you made. Headphones won’t make you deaf unless you’re absolutely blasting your music at full volume.
I hope you’re feeling better soon and not letting her shit get you down. You got this.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•"What is the oldest country in the world that still exists?" is a Ship of Theseus problem.
61·1 month agoSame with indigenous people on turtle island (north america).
I’d argue that it doesnt really count since the concept of ‘country’ though is more colonial in its origins so realistically, a ‘country’ wouldn’t exist until after colonization in these areas.
Nations might’ve existed with different groups/tribes/villages sharing a culture, but the concepts of clear-cut borders, strict land ownership, and nationalism (which to me are a requirement for the concept of a “country”) are significantly different in many indigenous cultures as compared to colonial states. Maybe with the exception of some Latin American empires? Though I don’t know enough about those empires to be confident in that.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How to separate self-worth from Achievements and External Validation?
2·1 month agoI feel you 100%, I have the same voice. If you want to watch something truly depressing but extremely relatable, the episode called “stupid piece of shit” from bojack horseman covers the topic in a much more real way than any cartoon has the right to do so.
We can get through it though, the voice is a liar.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How to separate self-worth from Achievements and External Validation?
2·1 month agoI don’t… Hahaha this is one of the things I most often speak to my counsellor about though and I’m working hard on it.
My issue is more around productivity (achievements), so what I work on is doing things for the sake of doing them, not for the final product, i.e. doing art for the process or even playing a game just to play and not for literal achievements. Learning to just enjoy things for the process or just doing ‘nothing’. They suggested I could just come home and sit and watch my cats and… Just do nothing. I’m still working on that one.
We haven’t gotten that far into external validation, but I think learning to have compassion/love for yourself helps with that.
Honestly, I had that one and this GIF of a fat weiner dog chasing batman saved to my bookmarks for a long time because they bring me so much joy.
With my current cats I have a clear favourite so I would go to her, and then the other one would run in the room and demand the attention because he is a needy little shit. I love him though, he just never lets her (or anyone) have a moment of peace.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Did it really used to be common for guys to go to a bar every night like in Cheers or The Simpsons?
7·1 month agoI had the same experience and did feel badly for them as well. For a lot of them (especially middle aged men in my experience), they just seemed very lonely. I miss a lot of those regulars, they were generally good people.

I would still use illiterate in that case, and would argue that is the correct term at least according to Merriam Webster:
Or even just at its most basic:
