This game is just so fucking good. A little slow in the beginning but once your powers open up it’s a blast. This is worth the price of admission on the Maze alone. Also if you’re trying to pick up AW2, this will definitely enhance it.

Bought it in gog last year at a similar price. If you are into single player campaigns this games is definitely one of the best ever made.

This is a good game. I need to finish it but God damn the difficulty spikes hard at certain points. It was basically not even challenging until I got to like the 3rd or 4th boss and then it became harder than Dark Souls. The references and humor are off the chain, though. They not only have analogues to popular SCPs, they reference their own games like Alan Wake and Max Payne in both story and game mechanics and it’s awesome.

Also: I feel bad for the dude who had to keep his eyes on that fridge. So close to being rescued…

They don’t just reference Alan Wake. Alan Wake and Control are literally in the same universe.

There’s a DLC that connects the two together, and there will probably have a lot of connections to Control in Alan Wake 2. I’m sure that’s part of the reason for the sale.

Pro tip. Upgrade launch damage, made the game a ton easier. There’s also Gameplay assistances if it’s feeling a bit too difficult. I used this for the Alan Wake DLC .

It’s mostly the non-humanoid bosses that take a few tries just to understand their attack patterns. The humanoid dudes got spongey, but I haven’t died to them yet. There’s also the RNG upgrade bits that can make it easier or harder. I got lucky and have basically infinite ammo and I gain back health as I deal damage with those. It just doesn’t help when you die because the Eldritch horror you have to look up at to make sure you’re not slapped is also breaking the floor below you and you fall through into the void. lol

Totally just a skill issue on my part.

Little tip for the difficulty spikes; use the built in assist mode. It doesn’t effect achievements or progress, and it lets you adjust stamina, health, aim assist, and even just say screw it and turn on god mode.

Yeah I had to grind a bit once I got stuck, and then it went by pretty easily. I went into the dlcs to grind.

Hope I don’t get dragged through the coals but I have to offer a differing opinion for people.

I really didn’t enjoy playing this game. The gun combat felt extremely limited with only two weapons to swap between on the fly.

The abilities were fun and useful and maybe the best part of the gameplay, but not enough to redeem it for me.

The story started out great but really falls flat and felt extremely unsatisfying at the end, to the point I ran around for a few hours thinking I had missed something, until eventually looking it up online to confirm, that yes, that IS where they decided to end it. Felt very incomplete like we were waiting on an extra DLC that never came. (I played the original dlcs, to be clear)

The difficulty spikes were frustrating af. You’d be flying through the game no problem and then suddenly encounter a room where the enemies just took 90% of your health like perfect aim snipers from across the room.

The defensive abilities were key to survival, but it still suffered these issues if you just mistimed a single button press.

I loved the setting but hated the map and backtracking. Seriously, worst map of any game I’ve played recently. If your game is going for 3d Metroid, then at least make the map fucking clear.

Eventually a lot of the areas look a ton alike…

Some of the unkillable enemies were just cheesy.

Figuring out the boss fights sometimes felt more annoying than fun, one particular dlc enemy I think, involving lights was super annoying.

The Maze was one of the best things I’ve ever played/experienced, though. Unfortunately that high of a bar just made the rest of the lows for me feel lower.

All in all I’m glad lots of people like or love it, but for me I’d give it a solid 5 out of 10.

So just a heads up, it may not be for everyone.

I absolutely agree. I liked a lot about this game, but not enough to actually finish it. Combat was just frustrating, especially going from feeling powerful to powerless seemingly at random.

I think I got this game for around half price. Despite my criticisms, I still feel like I got my money’s worth out of it. Definitely recommended at $10.

It was an easy recent favorite of mine after a playthrough. The atmosphere is so well done. It got me to finally play Alan Wake and I’ll definitely pick up that sequel at some point too.

I tried Alan Wake at one point, but had a hard time getting into it. I also tried their other game, Quantum Break, but at the first part it wanted to download a video to link it to the TV show the game broke on me. It wouldn’t download the video, and I couldn’t skip it, so I was stuck less than an hour into it.

Control was so good that, for me, it retroactively made Alan Wake better by their connections.

However, in my opinion, that didn’t make Alan Wake good. It’s a game that should have worked wonders for me, but the gameplay loop being the same from beginning to end (and truthfully, it being monotonous didn’t help) and the controls being frustrating just made it a game I wanted to get through, rather than enjoy.

Unsure if I’m going to play Alan Wake 2, as it looks like the same gameplay that I didn’t enjoy.

For me the problem with AW, more than the boring gameplay loop, is the weird episodic format they shoehorned into it. You’d just be getting into the groove of the game, used to the annoying combat and stealth and such, and then it yanks you out of it and you have to watch an end of episode cutscene, and then a new episode cutscene, just to continue on

10 bucks for this game a a steal. The atmosphere and worldbuilding is amazing. It feels mysterious, creepy and there are some really unique moments that mess with your head. The action is fun and challenging at times. This is not a typical shooter though. And you have to be ready for weirdness. :)

It’s X-Files mixed with SCP sprinkled with some weird Finnish humor.

All wrapped in a beautiful presentation.

I found the gameplay not the most engaging but it was worth going until the end for everything else.

I had forgotten about this game… I put it on a wishlist ages ago waiting for a sale…

And it turns out, that sale happened a while back when my old computer was dead. I’ve had my new computer for months now and this game in my library and not remembered that I had it.

Probably one of the best games I ever played. I came for the visuals because I finally got an RTX card and stayed for the halflife vibes.

It’s the closest thing I’ve played to OG halflife. You get that similar feel of isolation and heroism, a lot of WTF is going on, some weird entity that is omnipresent, great gun play and action, and is almost entirely indoors. Story is more robust like HL2 evolved the genre.

I played this one twice in a row when it came out, first on PS4 and then PC. Game of the decade for sure, and one of my all time favorites! It’s just so good!

Honestly, I got annoyed by the combat about 3/4s in, but the game has excellent “cheats” or aids, however you want to call them, for adjusting the gameplay. Tuning the damage multipliers made the end of the game a lot less grindy and frustrating. I wish every game had such excellent fine tuning of difficulty.
