Some Forbes op-ed writer: “But household income is keeping up with inflation!”

Yeah, if you consider that “household income” now includes the income of the wife and kids as well. A few decades ago, only one person was needed to be a wage earner. Now, everyone in the household needs to work to maintain that standard of living. And that’s why our quality of life is declining.
