I hope that my rooted One UI 7 doesn’t get the update through some backdoor in the Google Play Services package… Or the next time I unblock Google Play to update the very few paid apps that I use…
Everyone should be degoogling their devices before malware gets installed by an update. Get rid of windows while you’re at it. This may take time, so start now.
Time to “divest” from Google’s garbage (and other “big tech” garbage):

Etc…
Last I saw, Jolla isn’t targeting the US markets. I was so sad! I really want one, it looks like a great phone. I’m gonna put in a reminder to check on them every few months to see if that changes.
Despite not targetting the USA market, the newly annunced Jolla Phone is reportedly very global and will support roaming in the USA, meaning it will probably be compatible.
I’ll definitely check back in to see which carriers they support once they release then.
On the sale page for the phone the two last questions of the FAQ address this, check them out.
Just switch to Pixel. I’ve got mine (9a) for around 500€.
Ironically, Google Pixel
Pixels are the only phone with the hardware and security the GOS project requires. GOS is working with an OEM to get GOS on another brand of phone.
Is that a joke?
Unironically, the Google Pixel is ironically one of the best phones you can get to de-Google your smartphone experience. For now.
Specifically if you use GrapheneOS. Pretty easy to install, I’ve been on it for a couple months now and it’s great.
Clown world. They’re one update away from banning that any second you’re putting too much trust in them
Just reinstall the OS without gapps. Done.
In my country, that’s a hard bargain, as we need certain apps that rely on gapps to identify ourselves in formal dealings with nation, county and city actors. But yeah, Graphene’s sandboxed Google Play Services would be a good start for me.
I highly doubt a smartphone is a requirement. They probably have an alternative you’re not considering
The general attitude is that you are required to be digitally literate and that you have the “required” equipment. Just like many businesses nowadays take it for granted that you have a card to pay with.
Most governments have laws that force companies to accept legal tender.
Google doesn’t sell any devices that run OneUI, which makes your post somewhat disingenuous… and strengthens your point. You bought the device from Samsung, so you are even more right to be news at what Google is doing since you are not Google’s customer.
It’s like on my old Nvidia SHIELD, an update rolled in and all of a sudden there are ads on the homepage. Some people were ok with TV/movie ads being on a TV/movie device, but, why the hell would I want ads for content only available on services that I don’t have? If they’d at least only given me ads for the services it knew I was subscribed to, I would have at least been less pissed off since it could have been useful.
Reached out to Nvidia and they say there isn’t anything they can do, it’s built that way by Google. By no means do I just blindly accept that that was accurate, but, it’s still bullshit that with a basic update all of a sudden the nature of my device was completely changed (imo) and I’m expected to just suck it up or work around it with 3rd party launchers that weren’t as polished.
Dunno if it’s gotten better/worse in the last couple years, mine died and I elected to not replace it with another Android device.
The ironic thing is that Samsung is even worse than Google for users’ rights, and has been for a long time.
