The voters are supposed to do that! When a candidate for office says something like “free daycare, free bus transportation” “I’ll be your retribution”, “you’ll never have to vote again” the voter is supposed to think and ask the questions, not just cheer them on!

@TubularTittyFrog The real tell is that there are 12,000 registered Lobbyists in DC. Their reporting reveals that in 2023 they distributed over $4Billion dollars to members of Congress from their special interest groups.
Statistically when they leave Congress, they become Lobbyists and make in excess of 6 times what they made from the people!
