Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How to create a black market for films, art, and other things in the future?English
7·11 hours agoYou’ve basically reinvented torrenting, but the first step of that is you need to save local copies of that art to your machine. Once you have it, peer to peer sharing will be the only vector for distributing it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•[US] What happens when the government shuts down, and if it stays down, what do we do?English
24·2 days agoThe U.S. balkanizing is what I expect to occur sometime in the next few decades. Divisions have just grown so strongly that there already are functionally a few different Americas, even if we’re still bound together for now.
In terms of the current shutdown though, I suspect it will last through Thanksgiving, and we will see the mother of all air traffic catastrophes. Multiple high profile crashes, tons of airports fully shutdown, lots of airspace shutdown, all amidst one of the busiest travel times of the year. Afterwards, there will be enough pressure to get the Reps to agree to a clean continuing resolution, which will fund the govt through January, and then we’ll do the whole song and dance again.

3·2 days agohe also 100% existed lol. Yasuke has tons of historical records about him because he didn’t exist in like ancient Japan, he was the bodyguard of Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku era. like you said, racists are just idiots and can’t stand actual history that goes against their stupidity.
how on earth were you doing that? do you have a Linux phone?

3·3 days agoYeah none of those reasons were why people hated Shadows though. It was entirely racists. They aren’t gonna make any more improvements to their formula because Ubisoft doesn’t innovate, they’ll just wait for someone else to add an interesting twist to the open world formula and then steal that.

4·4 days agoThis is exactly it. They think they’ll look better if their essay shows off two or three different things they’ve done, when the truth is that the best essays I’ve read are from students who pick one singular thing and fully explore it. Classic style over substance.
I thankfully don’t have kids, so I dunno if they’re still doing it, but I first heard of it in October. Also dunno if it happened outside of the US

1·4 days agoThat’s at the college level though. Unfortunately, I work with high schoolers, and I have not seen the same levels of respect given to the humanities as I see STEM in US high schools. Hell, in some states they seem to straight up allow students to take more STEM courses in lieu of humanities.

5·4 days agodon’t worry, I work at a non-profit so they barely pay me lol. It’s mostly a curse, but the job market is bad in the U.S. since we’re teetering on the brink of collapse. I don’t really like my job, but I’ve got no other prospects that wouldn’t betray my morals.

16·4 days agoThe part that really blows my mind is the kids who have published research papers but still don’t understand this. I know they understand the concept of a thesis statement! They know how to write a closing paragraph! Yet still, they’ll write a meandering essay about three unrelated topics with no attempt to tie them together.
It’s always the journalism kids that seem to actually understand how to write. The overfocus on STEM sucks.

12·4 days agothis is written by a masc man. if I’m not washing my hair and just scrubbing, yeah I can get it done in 10-15 minutes. If I need to wash my hair though? easily 30 minutes. If I need to shave my legs/body? I’m probably drawing a bath and I’ll see you in an hour at least.

25 used to be a vocal stim kids would say, I wanna say its origin is from a joke in Spongebob.

66·4 days agoas someone forced to read essays written by children but not involved in the education process, I really wish we stopped teaching like this. about 99% of essays I read have a great lede, and then 98% of them veer off into tangents and get off track. It feels like American education is so focused on the lede that it ignores the nut graf completely.

2·5 days agoclosed source instead of open source nvidia driver.
This is where the problem really began. though afaik, you can get a version of the bazzite distro with the closed source nvidia drivers already installed, so did you select a different one? Nvidia gave me nothing but issues when I was trying to migrate to Linux though. Ever since I switched to AMD, it’s been smooth sailing.

Politics@beehaw.org•Seven data-driven lessons from the 2025 electionsEnglish
6·5 days agoMore said they were voting against him than voting for either party’s nominees for governor, according to the exits.
And this is the part that scares me. Because Democrats are going to take this as a mandate that their corporate policies are popular with the people, when the truth is that the American people just want anything else. If people aren’t actually getting excited to vote for them now, they probably won’t be excited for vote for them again in 2032 after four years of milquetoast Dems controlling the presidency and maybe the Senate or House. Material conditions will continue to worsen, people will once again forget how awful things were under Trump, and they will choose fascism again.
I worry that the US is already doomed to repeat a very stupid cycle. The only win Dems should really be focusing on is Mamdani’s, because those voters were actually excited to vote for Mamdani. I have strong suspicions that any lessons will be learned by the party from him though.

1·5 days agoYou’re confusing a societal concept of health for a biological one. Generally speaking, we classify any brain that does not function as expected as abnormal. However, you wouldn’t necessarily define that person as “sick” or “unwell,” in the same way that you wouldn’t call someone with synesthesia or without a visio-spatial sketchpad “sick.” It’s just not functioning as expected.
People eating spicy food is actually different, because there can be a couple different reasons for it. If it’s a case of receptors misfiring and indicating pleasure instead of pain, then yes they’d have unhealthy brains. I think typically spice enthusiasts have abnormal tongues though. Usually their receptors have dulled either due to repeated exposure to spice, genetic differences at birth, or external factors like coal dust.

132·6 days agoIt’s because you have a healthier brain. some of us have our wires crossed in such a way that a lil bit of getting hurt actually feels sexy. Most masochism isn’t getting full-on tortured though, a lot of it is more sharp, quick pains like smacks or whips or bites. Obv there are more extreme cases, and you can kinda think of those as the wires getting really crossed.

I haven’t quite hit thirty yet, but my friend has. She’s taken up boxing, which might seem counterintuitive, but building up your strength is a great way to avoid having a weak core and knees. It also means she does regular stretching.
