  • Having a couple of things I like to do helps me such as listening to music, reading, watching movies, gaming etc. Having the discipline to cut off took a while to master as well. Over the weekends, I tell my team members not to send emails or text messages unless its super urgent. I give myself targets, for example watching a couple of movies or TV shows over the weekend and deal with the shit come Monday.

I was supposed to have a great time but instead I burned myself out

That’s when you need to take a step back, do something else. When I’m gaming I do burn myself out, so now I’m taking a break from WoW and started on movies / tv shows again.

  • First, I would suggest establishing a clear line between work and social, the higher up you go, the less friends you have. It’s great that you tried to help them initially and now it looks like you’re getting fucked unfortunately. I would advise staying away from these people on a social level and continue to work together professionally, clear line of separation.

Since the company was lining to performance management them, then they must have not been performing. Unfortunately in the corporate world, people are happy to palm problems off to other departments. From what I’ve read, it has been 2 years since, and not knowing how long they have been in the company, making performance management and termination a tad more complicated.

You can’t get them fired for no reason, but you can report your conversation to HR and have this logged as inappropriate and troubling. In all reputable companies there’s a whistleblower system where you can anonymously report things on ethics, mismanagement, toxic behavior etc.

In sum, keep it professional and avoid social, if they are not performing, they’ll end up getting performance managed out soon enough.

  • Might sound crazy, but I actually went through it all lol. For music you may want to consider the lastfm cog. I use it for movies so I have themoviedb cog and created my own letterboxd cog… not great but it works. i also use aiuser with an API, useful to get some (old) information and you can set it up to roast people or talk in a certain way for entertainment purposes. cleanup is another useful cog to quickly clean up a lot of messages quickly (delete from message ID, delete messages between message ID1 and ID2 etc). i use the system cog to get server cpu/ram/hd usage.
