After watching the trailers for Academy I generally liked what I saw, but Holly Hunter felt oddly reminiscent of Geneviève Bujold as Janeway. I even made a comment somewhere on here that was like “I need to be sold more on Holly Hunter”.

The marketing made her out to be a “barefoot bohemian who loves old books and records and lounges around the bridge” which honesyl did not appeal to me but I ended up absolutely loving it. She is somehow nailing being a Starfleet captain without falling back on any familiar tropes.

    I thought she was terrible out of context in the trailers.

    In the show, we’re only two episodes in and she’s absolutely top tier Captain material.

    @Kirk

    It was a present, they didn’t want to spoil how good a show they’d made.

    Holly Hunter was Perfect, Academy is perfect.

    Just enough pretty pics to get fans there day one.

    Unpopular opinion: I hate her in this role. I like what she is doing with this role, I just wish it was someone else.

    I’m wondering if she will leave the series after season one, just like they did with Jason and Isaacs previously.

    She’s an Oscar winning actress, slumming it on a Star Trek show on a minor streaming network. They are probably not really able to afford her salary long term unless she’s working at a discount because shes a Star Trek fan.

    I’m also wondering if she’s done any internal grumbling about working for Paramount’s new management.

      Sure she’s an Oscar winner. But that was a long time ago. And Oscars are never a guarantee of future work or pay rate.

      For nearly a decade now she’s only done a few guest spots on series, some supporting roles in small movies, a few voice roles. This show is the biggest thing she done in quite a while.

      While Paramount+ may be a 3rd tier streaming service, this is Start Trek, and it’s got a real budget behind it.

        Exactly, they got Paul Giamatti for Spock’s sake. When an actor is at their level they can be choosy about the roles they take on.

          He’s a special case. He’s been a Trekie since he was young. He’s wanted to be a Klingon forever. He might be doing this for scale rate. And I’d be surprised if he’s on more than a season. If he is, it’ll only be a few episodes each.

      They started filming the season 2 finale this week. I think if she wasn’t going to be in season 2 we’d have heard something by now.

      @reddig33 @Kirk

      Lol.
      People LOVE being on Trek.
      My jaw dropped as director David Cronenberg walked into frame as a federation official, Whoopie Goldberg gave years to Trek. This year’s villain has long lusted after a juicy role in Trek, Paul Giamatti, talked long on Stephen Colbert’s censored show about their DELIGHT at being on Trek.

      Colbert is also happily on Star Trek this year.

      Holly Hunter, Michelle Yeoh yeah, they lurve star trek, loff it. Very happy campers.
